Der große Preis von Belgien schien so vor sich hin zu dümpeln, als der Regen zwei Runden vor Rennende das Feld durcheinander wirbelte. Hamilton, der das ganze Rennen hinter Räikkönen her fuhr, überholte den Finnen um nur wenige Meter diese wieder zu verlieren. Dann verlor Räikkönen die Nerven und den Grip, und rutschte in die Seitenbegrenzung. Hamilton gewann das wahnsinns Finale des Rennens, wurde jedoch später von den Rennkommissaren nachträglich für das Abkürzen der letzten Schikane vor Start-Ziel mit einer 25 Sekunden Strafe bestraft. Felipe Massa (Ferrari) wurde demnach als Sieger ernannt. Nick Heidfeld, der sich zwei Runden vor Rennende Regenreifen holte, erbte Platz Zwei vor Lewis Hamilton, der nach seiner Strafe den dritter Platz erhielt. Fernando Alonso (Renault) wurde Vierter vor Sebastian Vettel (Toro Rosso). Robert Kubica (BMW – Sauber) wurde Sechster vor Sebastian Bourdais (Toro Rosso) und Timo Glock (Toyota), der jedoch nach dem Rennen von der Rennleitung wegen Überholens unter gelber Flagge bestraft wurde. Die Stewards verhängten eine 25 Sekunden Zeitstrafe, die dem Toyota – Piloten ein WM – Punkt kostete. Mark Webber (Red Bull), der von Glock in der letzten Kurve überholt wurde, profitierte von der Strafe und kassierte seinen 19. WM – Punkt. Heikki Kovalainen (Renault) wurde Zehnter vor David Coulthard (Red Bull), Nico Rosberg (Williams) und Adrian Sutil im Force India. Kazuki Nakajima erreichte im Williams Platz Vierzehn. Jenson Button (Honda) wurde Fünfzehnter vor Jarno Trulli (Toyota) und Giancarlo Fisichella (Force India). Kimi Räikkönen wurde noch als Achtzehnter gewertet. Rubens Barrichello (Honda) fiel in Runde 19, Nelson Piquet in Runde 13 aus.
Als dreißig Minuten vor Start des Rennen in Spa die ersten Autos auf die Strecke fuhren, um entweder in die Startaufstellung oder eine Installationsrunde zu fahren, meldeten die Fahrer an ihre Teams eine nasse Rennstrecke. Dennoch fuhren alle Piloten mit Trockenreifen los. Bis auf Nelson Piquet hatten auch alle die weichere der beiden zur Verfügung stehenden Mischungen aufgezogen.
Ganz vorne in der Startaufstellung stand der Brite Lewis Hamilton im McLaren Mercedes vor Felipe Massa (Ferrari), Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren Mercedes) und Kimi Räikkönen im zweiten Ferrari. Dahinter Nick Heidfeld, der sich im BMW – Sauber vor seinen Teamkollegen Robert Kubica (Startplatz 8) qualifizieren konnte. Auf Sechs stand Fernando Alonso im Renault vor Mark Webber im Red Bull Renault. Sebastian Vettel qualifizierte sich hinter einem Toro Rosso Teamkollegen Sebastien Bourdais auf Startplatz 10. Timo Glock (Toyota) startete von Startplatz 13, Nico Rosberg im Williams Toyota von Startplatz 15 und Adrian Sutil von Platz Achtzehn.
Der Start begann auf noch feuchter Fahrbahn. Jarno Trulli schoß von seinem Startplatz Elf bis auf Platz vier vor, wurde aber dann von Sebastien Bourdais von Hinten gerammt, was sein Rennen komplett kaputt machte. Danach fuhr der Italiener nur noch hinter dem Feld, ohne Chance auf Verbesserung, hinterher. Sebastien Bourdais hingegen fuhr das gesamte Rennen mit einem defekten Frontflügel und holte sich am Ende sogar den siebten Platz.
Heikki Kovalainen glänzte in seinem Silberpfeil überhaupt nicht und leistete sich im Laufe des Rennens mehrere Fehler. Gleich beim Start schubste der Finne Nick Heidfeld schon in der ersten Kurve von der Strecke, was für beide Fahrer einen Verlust von gleich mehreren Plätzen bedeutete. In Runde zehn versuchte Kovalainen an Mark Webber vorbei zu kommen und rammte den Australier ebenfalls von der Strecke. Beide konnten weiter fahren, wobei diese Aktion von Heikki dieses mal nicht ohne Folgen blieb. Die Rennleitung bestrafte den McLaren Piloten und ließen ihn ein mal durch die Boxengasse fahren.
Ganz vorne setzte sich in der ersten Runde Lewis Hamilton im McLaren Mercedes durch. Felipe Massa musste sich dem hoch motivierten Teamkollegen Kimi Räikkönen im Sprint auf die Eau Rouge geschlagen geben. Dies war die letzte Chance für den Finnen, seinen WM – Titel zu verteidigen. Diese Motivation Räikkönen in der zweiten Runde, als Lewis Hamilton sich am Ende der Start – Ziel drehte. Zwar konnte Hamilton zuerst vorne bleiben, verlor jedoch, wie Massa eine Runde zuvor, den Sprint auf die Eau Rouge. Von diesem Augenblick an gab der Finne seine Führung nicht mehr ab, bis zu vorletzten Runde.
Adrian Sutil startete ein sehr gutes Rennen. In den ersten sieben Runden überholte er Jenson Button und auch David Coulthard. Dann jedoch verlor der Force India Pilot die Gewalt über seinen Wagen und kam von der Strecke ab, wobei er die zuvor gewonnenen Plätze wieder verlor. Sein Teamkollege Giancarlo Fisichella musste schon in der ersten Runde an die Box, da er sich ein Wagen bei einer Kollision beschädigte. Zwar konnte der Italiener weiter fahren, verlor aber viel Zeit gegenüber dem restlichem Feld.
Dann begannen die Boxenstopps in der Elften Runde. Eröffnet wurden die Stopps von Lewis Hamilton, eine Runde später kam Kimi Räikkönen und dann in Runde 13 Felipe Massa. An der Reihenfolge änderte sich jedoch nichts.
In der 13. Runde dann der erste Ausfall im Rennen. Nelson Piquet jr. rutschte von der Strecke und schlug dann leicht in den Reifenstapel ein. Dabei brach die Vorderradachse und der Brasilianer musste das Rennen nach nur dreizehn Runden beenden.
Durch die Boxenstopps kam Sebastien Bourdais im Toro Rosso kurzfristig bis auf den zweiten Platz nach vorne. Als dann Bourdais in der 14. Runde zum Tanken kam, verfolgte ihn der Pole Robert Kubica, der auf der gleichen Strategie unterwegs war. Die Toro Rosso Crew fertigte ihren Piloten jedoch schneller ab, als die BMW – Crew ihren Fahrer. Bourdais blieb auch nach dem Stopp vor Kubica auf Platz Fünf.
Für Rubens Barrichello war nach Neunzehn Runden Feierabend. Er stellte seinen Honda in der Box ab und musste das Rennen als Zuschauer weiter beobachten.
Nachdem sich Kubica beim Boxenkampf Sebastien Bourdais geschlagen geben musste, kam dieses Mal der Pole in der 33. Runde vor einem Toro Rosso in die Box. Sebastian Vettel war diesmal der Gegner. Jedoch musste Kubica auch auch diesem Toro Rosso – Fahrer geschlagen geben. Seine Boxencrew patze. Der Tankrüssel klemmte kein Betanken, so dass der BMW – Pilot mehrere Sekunden verlor. Dies kostete ihm zwei Plätze. Zum einem einen gegen Vettel, zum Anderen einen gegen seinen Teamkollegen Nick Heidfeld.
Dann fing das Rennen an, einen langweiligen Charakter zu entwickeln. Kimi Räikkönen fuhr vor Lewis Hamilton und Felipe Massa bis zur ominösen 41. Runde. Lewis Hamilton holte auf seinem Rivalen immer deutlicher auf. Der Grund war wohl der beginnende Regen, drei Runden vor Rennende. Als Hamilton dann Räikkönen hätte angreifen können, rutschte der Brite ein wenig auf der Strecke und verlor gleich wieder anderthalb Sekunden. Auf dem Weg zur Start – Ziel, in der Busstop – Schikane, war dann der McLaren Pilot wieder im Heck des Ferrari und versuchte, diesen außen zu überholen. Da jedoch Kimi Räikkönen nicht nachgab, musste der Hamilton nach einer leichten Kollision die Schikane abkürzen und danach den Ferrari wieder passieren lassen. Am Ende der Start Ziel jedoch schoss der Brite am Finnen vorbei und übernahm die Führung. Dabei kollidierte beide erneut, konnten aber weiter fahren. Nur wenige Meter später rutschte Hamilton in der Eau Rouge vor der Strecke und Räikkönen übernahm erneut die Führung. Diese hatte der Finne jeodoch nur wenige Meter, da auch er von der Strecke rutschte. Als beide wieder auf der Strecke waren führte Hamilton vor Räikkönen. Völlig übermotiviert versuchte der Finne seine Position wieder zurück zu bekommen und endete dann nach einem weiteren Dreher in den Reifenstapeln. Nun musste Lewis Hamilton nur noch in den letzten anderthalb Runde das Rennen zu Ende fahren. Zwar kam Felipe Massa noch mal an den Führenden ran, dieser machte jedoch langsamer, um seinen zweiten Platz zu sichern. Weiter turbulent wurde es auch hinter dem Führungsduo. Nick Heidfeld, dem nur eine Hand voll Punkten winkten, kam zwei Runden vor Rennende an die Box und holte sich Regenreifen. Als er wieder für zwei Runden auf die Strecke kam, war der BMW – Pilot etwa 30 Sekunden schneller als die Konkurrenz. Er schnappte sich Bourdais, Kubica, Vettel und Fernando Alonso in nur einer Runde und wurde mit dem dritten Platz, hinter Hamilton und Massa belohnt. Da die Rennkommissare jedoch nach dem Rennen Lewis Hamilton eine 25 Sekunden Strafe auferlegten, wurde Felipe Massa als Sieger, und Nick Heidfeld als Zweiter von Spa ernannt. Lewis Hamilton musste sich mit dem dritten Platz und nur sechs WM Punkten begnügen. Vierter wurde Fernando Alonso im Renault, fast Zeitgleich mit Sebastian Vettel (Toro Rosso) und Robert Kubica. Knapp zwei Sekunden hinter diesem Trio überquerte auch Sebastien Bourdais im zweiten Toro Rosso als Siebter die Ziellinie. Timo Glock eroberte zwar mit Regenreifen den letzten WM – Punkt und überholte Mark Webber (Red Bull) kurz vor Rennende, musste diesen jedoch wieder abgeben, da die Stewards ihn beim Überholen unter Gelb erwischt hatten. Sie bestraften den Toyota – Piloten mit einer 25 Sekundenstrafe. Mark Webber erhielt somit den letzten WM – Punkt aus Belgien und Glock wurde Neunter. Heikki Kovalainen beendete das Rennen, ohne es über die Ziellinie geschafft zu haben und wurde als Zehnter gewertet. Elfter wurde David Coulthard im Red Bull vor Nico Rosberg (Williams), knapp vor Adrian Sutil im Force India. Vierzehnter wurde Kazuki Nakajima (Williams) vor Jenson Button (Honda), Jarno Trulli (Toyota) und Giancarlo Fisichella (Force India), der es in den letzten beiden Runden ebenfalls mit Regenreifen versuchte.
In der WM führt nun Lewis Hamilton mit 74 Punkte vor Felipe Massa (72 Punkte). Kimi Räikkönen (57 Punkte) verpasste mit seinem Fahrfehler in der vorletzten Runde den Anschluss und wurde sogar von Robert Kubica (58 Punkte) in der WM – Wertung eingeholt. Nick Heidfeld überholte in der WM – Wertung McLaren Piloten Heikki Kovalainen.
Schon in einer Woche geht es mit der Saison in Monza weiter. Eine Chance für Massa, auf Hamilton aufzuschließen? Wird Räikkönen nun für Massa die Rennen fahren?

Felipe Massa, Ferrari (Sieger):[Interview vor der Bestrafung von Lewis Hamilton]
"This was a very strange race, with the start and finish taking place in rather difficult conditions. After the start I thought Eau Rouge might be wetter and so I was a bit cautious. Kimi attacked and managed to get by. From then on I realized it would be hard to pass the two guys ahead of me, even if the lap times were quite similar. I tried to manage the situation, especially towards the end. When it started to rain, I had a pretty good margin over my closest pursuers and I preferred not to take any risks, especially given what was going on in front of me. Today the car wasn't perfectly balanced. On Saturday morning, we had slightly reduced the aerodynamic downforcc, as you usually do for the race here, but today's track conditions definitely did not suit this choice. The hard tyres? They were definitely slower than the soft ones and lacked grip, which made the car a bit inconsistent in terms of balance."

"Ich hatte ein phantastisches Rennwochenende und bin heute sehr froh. Beim Start kam ich sogar etwas besser weg als die Autos vor mir. Dann bin ich nach außen gezogen, und Heikki Kovalainen ist mir leider ins Auto gefahren. Das kann passieren, ich war froh, dass mein Auto nicht weiter beschädigt war, aber natürlich habe ich einige Plätze verloren. Später konnte ich ein paar Autos wieder überholen, aber dann hing ich im Verkehr fest. Als es begann zu nieseln, war ich überzeugt, dass der Regen in der nächsten Runde stärker werden würde und habe mich entschieden, auf Regenreifen zu wechseln. Das Team hat nochmals nachgefragt, ob ich das auch ernst meine. Als ich dann aus der Boxengasse fuhr, habe ich gefragt, wie viele Runden es noch wären. Mein Ingenieur sagte mir, diese und noch eine. Ich sah weit und breit kein Auto und dachte schon, oh Mann, das war wohl die falsche Entscheidung, aber dann hat sie sich doch ausgezahlt. Es war eine Frage von Sekt oder Selters."

Lewis Hamilton, McLaren Mercedes (3.Platz):
"That was one of the most exciting races of my whole career – it was incredibly tough. My spin on lap two put me on the back foot for the rest of the race, but I could see Kimi ahead and I was just pushing, pushing, pushing to close that gap, hoping he would catch traffic and allow me to get nearer. When the heavens opened, Kimi was a little cautious under braking and I was able to get really close. When I had a look around the outside at the chicane, we almost had an accident, and I needed to steer left to avoid him. As we crossed the start/finish line, I left him the space to get back ahead and then managed to get my car up the inside at La Source."

Fernando Alonso, Renault (4.Platz):
"We finished fourth after a difficult race with plenty of incidents. It’s a good result for the team, especially for our position in the championship because our objective was to score some important points. We missed out on a podium today, but we have shown that we can be the third strongest team in the championship."

Sebastian Vettel, Scuderia Toro Rosso (5.Platz):
"Both me and Seb have good reason to smile after a race like that. The last lap was unbelievable and I was shocked as I got passed in the last fifty metres and then Heidfeld followed by Alonso drove past me with a “whoosh” on their intermediates. It was very tricky at the end and you really had to trust your car. We were all saying that Eau Rouge and Blanchimont are now flat, but with a few drops of rain, I tell you, you see the real nature of these corners. Overall it was a fantastic race, even though I was stuck in traffic for a while. But I was very happy with the car and we had a very strong pace today. The guys at the front are still in a different dimension, but we have made some good steps forward and now it is up to us to use that potential at the next few races."

Robert Kubica, BMW - Sauber (6.Platz):
"Ich bin nicht zufrieden mit dem Resultat. Ich hatte heute die Möglichkeit, aufs Podium zu fahren. Wir hatten jedoch ein Problem während des zweiten Boxenstopps. Ich verlor zwei oder drei Positionen und kam hinter Nick zurück auf die Strecke. Als es zu regnen begann, fuhr er in die Box und wechselte die Reifen. Das hätte bei mir zu viel Zeit gekostet. Ich war ja direkt hinter Nick, wir wären praktisch gleichzeitig angekommen. Ich hatte darüber hinaus keine Informationen zum Wetter, weil es Probleme mit dem Funk gab. Leider haben wir Punkte verschenkt. Naja, das ist Rennsport."

Sebastien Bourdais, Scuderia Toro Rosso (7.Platz):
"On the last lap it was a lottery with the car getting away from you with every turn of the wheel. It’s a horrible situation, as everything had been under control up until then. But I am not in a situation where I can risk everything and at the end of the race I didn’t even know where I finished. It was so close to being a great result I felt I could almost touch it and so it was a very frustrating way to finish what was a great weekend up to that point. Such a shame, but nevertheless a very strong result for the team."

Mark Webber, Red Bull Racing (8.Platz):[Interview vor der Bestrafung von Timo Glock]
"The first few laps were quite tricky due to the conditions, but our start was okay. I was running a bit short and when doing that it helps to have a clear track, but I didn’t. I lost some time behind Bourdais, who was a bit heavier, but we were still in a reasonable position. Then I got hit by Heikki (Kovalainen) and lost some time. It hurt our strategy, which was quite aggressive. The car felt best in the last stint on the prime tyres."

"I had quite a tricky race but I am pleased with a point because for a long time today it looked like we would not be able to achieve that. I have to say thank you to the team, especially the guys who work on the starts because it was mega for both cars and in the last couple of races they have done a perfect job. I couldn't make up as many places as I wanted at the first corner because I saw Sébastien Bourdais slide into Jarno and I thought there would be a mess so I tried to stay out of it. Then for the first couple of laps I couldn't get any heat into the tyres. I struggled quite a lot and lost a few places. When the rain started I made the decision to come in and change to standard wet tyres and it was the right thing to do. It was not easy but I just got past Mark Webber in the last corner and took the final point."

Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren Mercedes (10.Platz):
"I got squeezed between two cars at the first corner, and it cost me a lot of places. But I knew I had the car to claw things back and was making good progress until I came up alongside Mark Webber at the final chicane. I knew I was faster than him, but maybe he didn’t realise I was on the inside and we touched, spinning him in front of me. That’s racing. It was a racing accident, but it earned me a drive-through penalty and knocked me back down the field. Still, my pace was good on the prime tyre, and I still managed to overtake quite a few cars. In the last few laps I thought I could take advantage of the damp conditions until I started to lose gears. In the end, the gearbox failed on the very last lap and I had to stop."

David Coulthard, Red Bull Racing (11.Platz):
"I got held up a lot behind the Hondas at the start and it was hard to make up positions from there. We have poor drivability. The changeable conditions made things interesting at the end, we could probably have changed to intermediate tyres one lap earlier."

Nico Rosberg, Williams - Toyota (12.Platz):
"It wasn’t such an exciting race for me today. Ultimately I did the best I could from where I
started and the performance we had in the car and, I think adding all this up, 12 th is
probably about the best we could have achieved. At the end of the race we had to make
the difficult judgement to come in for the wet tyres, and although we didn’t make any
gain, I still think it was a good decision to take. Overall then, it wasn’t a good weekend
for us and now we need to look forward to Monza and try to improve things. After the
recent test there we are confident that it is a track that will suit us better."

Adrian Sutil, Force India (13.Platz):
"It was a strong race for us, with a good performance. We had quite a lot of fights on the
circuit and lots of overtaking. I caught up with Button and was right behind him, but then there
was the rain in the last laps. As there were just a couple of laps left and we were quite quick
on the wet conditions with dry tyres, we stayed out and I could pass him and some other
guys. I am quite happy with this race."

Kazuki Nakajima, Williams - Toyota (14.Platz):
"Today was a difficult race for me. I had a bit of contact in the first corner which cost me
some time, so from then on I just tried to maintain a consistent pace because I was on a
one-stop strategy. Given this, I think my race pace was not bad compared with those
around me. I made some progress during the race, then just at the end, the rain came
and it was a tough call to either to stay on the slicks or try to see what the wets might do
for us. In the end we made the stop and changed the tyres, but we didn’t have enough
time to make up any ground."

Jenson Button, Honda (15.Platz):
"It's been a tough weekend and unfortunately the car's performance has been a long way off where I thought we would be here in Spa. I didn't have a great start from 17th and got completely boxed in with cars everywhere that I wanted to go. I then lost some time in the train of cars caught behind Rubens when he had his gearbox problem. The car was not handling well at all throughout the first stint as I had no grip and very little balance. So when I came in and switched to the prime tyre, we added front wing which I thought we needed, but not having had the the opportunity to compare the two tyres yesterday, this unfortunately gave me too much front end. Our rear tyre pressures were also too low which made the car very difficult to drive."

Janro Trulli, Toyota (16.Platz):
"I was very unlucky because I had a great start and from 11th I was in the top six, but I was hit really hard from the back and this damaged the car. After that the car was undrivable and on top of that the accident caused a gearbox problem, so my only target was to finish the race. Once again I wasn't very lucky here - it seems to happen too often at Spa that I am competitive but I have bad luck. I was hoping we could have a strong race and score some points. This was possible because we had a competitive strategy and a great start so it's a shame that we couldn't manage to do it."

Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India (17.Platz):
"Unfortunately Nakajima spun and came across in front of my car and I broke the front wing
and damaged the car quite a lot. Coming back to the pits I lost a lot of time as I had no front
wing and punctured tyres. Unfortunately when I went out of the pitlane I was just in front of the
leaders and then had blue flags at least 40 times! Towards the end of the race, looking at the
weather I called the box and said I wanted to put on the rain tyres. It was the right choice but
there were just two or three laps left and it would have been nice to have those conditions
earlier, but I think considering the start the end result was not too bad."

Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari (18.Platz):
"I came here to win and I came close. In the final laps the track conditions were very critical and unfortunately, I ran wide and when I tried to get back on track, I spun and ended up in the wall. It was a shame because today the car was working really well. I got a good start and managed to pass Felipe on the straight and then overtook Hamilton when he spun at the start of the second lap. On the soft tyres, I could run at a good pace, while the final set, the harder ones, was not quite there - definitely not as good in performance terms as those I'd used in the past couple of days - and the balance of the car was not as good as earlier. The arrival of the rain definitely did not help. In these conditions, if you are in front you have to be more cautious as you don't know how much grip you'll find in each braking area. That's how Hamilton managed to close on me and then happened what you all saw. It's the second race in a row that I've failed to score points. Clearly the championship situation is what it is, but I'm not the sort to give up that easily."

Rubens Barrichello, Honda (Ausgefallen):
"The race was actually going quite well for me but unfortunately I lost sixth gear not long after I overtook Trulli. I tried to keep going but with the way that the gearbox works, you have to go through sixth gear before you can get seventh gear, which caused over-revving of the engine and the potential for significant damage. The team decided it would be best to retire the car as this is my first race with this engine and I have to race with it at Monza next weekend. Overall it has not been a great weekend. Our biggest problem has been our struggle to get temperature into the tyres, which affected our performance very badly."

Nelson Piquet jr., Renault (Ausgefallen):
"The plan was to run a one-stop strategy today and so my car was heavy on fuel. I made a good start and gained five places, which was encouraging, but there were still some damp patches on the circuit and I made a mistake. It’s a shame because I’m sure we could have done something today. I want to remain positive and I’m now looking forward to Monza, where we tested last week. I hope we can have a strong race there."

Ganz vorne in der Startaufstellung stand der Brite Lewis Hamilton im McLaren Mercedes vor Felipe Massa (Ferrari), Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren Mercedes) und Kimi Räikkönen im zweiten Ferrari. Dahinter Nick Heidfeld, der sich im BMW – Sauber vor seinen Teamkollegen Robert Kubica (Startplatz 8) qualifizieren konnte. Auf Sechs stand Fernando Alonso im Renault vor Mark Webber im Red Bull Renault. Sebastian Vettel qualifizierte sich hinter einem Toro Rosso Teamkollegen Sebastien Bourdais auf Startplatz 10. Timo Glock (Toyota) startete von Startplatz 13, Nico Rosberg im Williams Toyota von Startplatz 15 und Adrian Sutil von Platz Achtzehn.
Der Start begann auf noch feuchter Fahrbahn. Jarno Trulli schoß von seinem Startplatz Elf bis auf Platz vier vor, wurde aber dann von Sebastien Bourdais von Hinten gerammt, was sein Rennen komplett kaputt machte. Danach fuhr der Italiener nur noch hinter dem Feld, ohne Chance auf Verbesserung, hinterher. Sebastien Bourdais hingegen fuhr das gesamte Rennen mit einem defekten Frontflügel und holte sich am Ende sogar den siebten Platz.
Heikki Kovalainen glänzte in seinem Silberpfeil überhaupt nicht und leistete sich im Laufe des Rennens mehrere Fehler. Gleich beim Start schubste der Finne Nick Heidfeld schon in der ersten Kurve von der Strecke, was für beide Fahrer einen Verlust von gleich mehreren Plätzen bedeutete. In Runde zehn versuchte Kovalainen an Mark Webber vorbei zu kommen und rammte den Australier ebenfalls von der Strecke. Beide konnten weiter fahren, wobei diese Aktion von Heikki dieses mal nicht ohne Folgen blieb. Die Rennleitung bestrafte den McLaren Piloten und ließen ihn ein mal durch die Boxengasse fahren.
Ganz vorne setzte sich in der ersten Runde Lewis Hamilton im McLaren Mercedes durch. Felipe Massa musste sich dem hoch motivierten Teamkollegen Kimi Räikkönen im Sprint auf die Eau Rouge geschlagen geben. Dies war die letzte Chance für den Finnen, seinen WM – Titel zu verteidigen. Diese Motivation Räikkönen in der zweiten Runde, als Lewis Hamilton sich am Ende der Start – Ziel drehte. Zwar konnte Hamilton zuerst vorne bleiben, verlor jedoch, wie Massa eine Runde zuvor, den Sprint auf die Eau Rouge. Von diesem Augenblick an gab der Finne seine Führung nicht mehr ab, bis zu vorletzten Runde.
Adrian Sutil startete ein sehr gutes Rennen. In den ersten sieben Runden überholte er Jenson Button und auch David Coulthard. Dann jedoch verlor der Force India Pilot die Gewalt über seinen Wagen und kam von der Strecke ab, wobei er die zuvor gewonnenen Plätze wieder verlor. Sein Teamkollege Giancarlo Fisichella musste schon in der ersten Runde an die Box, da er sich ein Wagen bei einer Kollision beschädigte. Zwar konnte der Italiener weiter fahren, verlor aber viel Zeit gegenüber dem restlichem Feld.
Dann begannen die Boxenstopps in der Elften Runde. Eröffnet wurden die Stopps von Lewis Hamilton, eine Runde später kam Kimi Räikkönen und dann in Runde 13 Felipe Massa. An der Reihenfolge änderte sich jedoch nichts.
In der 13. Runde dann der erste Ausfall im Rennen. Nelson Piquet jr. rutschte von der Strecke und schlug dann leicht in den Reifenstapel ein. Dabei brach die Vorderradachse und der Brasilianer musste das Rennen nach nur dreizehn Runden beenden.
Durch die Boxenstopps kam Sebastien Bourdais im Toro Rosso kurzfristig bis auf den zweiten Platz nach vorne. Als dann Bourdais in der 14. Runde zum Tanken kam, verfolgte ihn der Pole Robert Kubica, der auf der gleichen Strategie unterwegs war. Die Toro Rosso Crew fertigte ihren Piloten jedoch schneller ab, als die BMW – Crew ihren Fahrer. Bourdais blieb auch nach dem Stopp vor Kubica auf Platz Fünf.
Für Rubens Barrichello war nach Neunzehn Runden Feierabend. Er stellte seinen Honda in der Box ab und musste das Rennen als Zuschauer weiter beobachten.
Nachdem sich Kubica beim Boxenkampf Sebastien Bourdais geschlagen geben musste, kam dieses Mal der Pole in der 33. Runde vor einem Toro Rosso in die Box. Sebastian Vettel war diesmal der Gegner. Jedoch musste Kubica auch auch diesem Toro Rosso – Fahrer geschlagen geben. Seine Boxencrew patze. Der Tankrüssel klemmte kein Betanken, so dass der BMW – Pilot mehrere Sekunden verlor. Dies kostete ihm zwei Plätze. Zum einem einen gegen Vettel, zum Anderen einen gegen seinen Teamkollegen Nick Heidfeld.
Dann fing das Rennen an, einen langweiligen Charakter zu entwickeln. Kimi Räikkönen fuhr vor Lewis Hamilton und Felipe Massa bis zur ominösen 41. Runde. Lewis Hamilton holte auf seinem Rivalen immer deutlicher auf. Der Grund war wohl der beginnende Regen, drei Runden vor Rennende. Als Hamilton dann Räikkönen hätte angreifen können, rutschte der Brite ein wenig auf der Strecke und verlor gleich wieder anderthalb Sekunden. Auf dem Weg zur Start – Ziel, in der Busstop – Schikane, war dann der McLaren Pilot wieder im Heck des Ferrari und versuchte, diesen außen zu überholen. Da jedoch Kimi Räikkönen nicht nachgab, musste der Hamilton nach einer leichten Kollision die Schikane abkürzen und danach den Ferrari wieder passieren lassen. Am Ende der Start Ziel jedoch schoss der Brite am Finnen vorbei und übernahm die Führung. Dabei kollidierte beide erneut, konnten aber weiter fahren. Nur wenige Meter später rutschte Hamilton in der Eau Rouge vor der Strecke und Räikkönen übernahm erneut die Führung. Diese hatte der Finne jeodoch nur wenige Meter, da auch er von der Strecke rutschte. Als beide wieder auf der Strecke waren führte Hamilton vor Räikkönen. Völlig übermotiviert versuchte der Finne seine Position wieder zurück zu bekommen und endete dann nach einem weiteren Dreher in den Reifenstapeln. Nun musste Lewis Hamilton nur noch in den letzten anderthalb Runde das Rennen zu Ende fahren. Zwar kam Felipe Massa noch mal an den Führenden ran, dieser machte jedoch langsamer, um seinen zweiten Platz zu sichern. Weiter turbulent wurde es auch hinter dem Führungsduo. Nick Heidfeld, dem nur eine Hand voll Punkten winkten, kam zwei Runden vor Rennende an die Box und holte sich Regenreifen. Als er wieder für zwei Runden auf die Strecke kam, war der BMW – Pilot etwa 30 Sekunden schneller als die Konkurrenz. Er schnappte sich Bourdais, Kubica, Vettel und Fernando Alonso in nur einer Runde und wurde mit dem dritten Platz, hinter Hamilton und Massa belohnt. Da die Rennkommissare jedoch nach dem Rennen Lewis Hamilton eine 25 Sekunden Strafe auferlegten, wurde Felipe Massa als Sieger, und Nick Heidfeld als Zweiter von Spa ernannt. Lewis Hamilton musste sich mit dem dritten Platz und nur sechs WM Punkten begnügen. Vierter wurde Fernando Alonso im Renault, fast Zeitgleich mit Sebastian Vettel (Toro Rosso) und Robert Kubica. Knapp zwei Sekunden hinter diesem Trio überquerte auch Sebastien Bourdais im zweiten Toro Rosso als Siebter die Ziellinie. Timo Glock eroberte zwar mit Regenreifen den letzten WM – Punkt und überholte Mark Webber (Red Bull) kurz vor Rennende, musste diesen jedoch wieder abgeben, da die Stewards ihn beim Überholen unter Gelb erwischt hatten. Sie bestraften den Toyota – Piloten mit einer 25 Sekundenstrafe. Mark Webber erhielt somit den letzten WM – Punkt aus Belgien und Glock wurde Neunter. Heikki Kovalainen beendete das Rennen, ohne es über die Ziellinie geschafft zu haben und wurde als Zehnter gewertet. Elfter wurde David Coulthard im Red Bull vor Nico Rosberg (Williams), knapp vor Adrian Sutil im Force India. Vierzehnter wurde Kazuki Nakajima (Williams) vor Jenson Button (Honda), Jarno Trulli (Toyota) und Giancarlo Fisichella (Force India), der es in den letzten beiden Runden ebenfalls mit Regenreifen versuchte.
In der WM führt nun Lewis Hamilton mit 74 Punkte vor Felipe Massa (72 Punkte). Kimi Räikkönen (57 Punkte) verpasste mit seinem Fahrfehler in der vorletzten Runde den Anschluss und wurde sogar von Robert Kubica (58 Punkte) in der WM – Wertung eingeholt. Nick Heidfeld überholte in der WM – Wertung McLaren Piloten Heikki Kovalainen.
Schon in einer Woche geht es mit der Saison in Monza weiter. Eine Chance für Massa, auf Hamilton aufzuschließen? Wird Räikkönen nun für Massa die Rennen fahren?
Felipe Massa, Ferrari (Sieger):[Interview vor der Bestrafung von Lewis Hamilton]
"This was a very strange race, with the start and finish taking place in rather difficult conditions. After the start I thought Eau Rouge might be wetter and so I was a bit cautious. Kimi attacked and managed to get by. From then on I realized it would be hard to pass the two guys ahead of me, even if the lap times were quite similar. I tried to manage the situation, especially towards the end. When it started to rain, I had a pretty good margin over my closest pursuers and I preferred not to take any risks, especially given what was going on in front of me. Today the car wasn't perfectly balanced. On Saturday morning, we had slightly reduced the aerodynamic downforcc, as you usually do for the race here, but today's track conditions definitely did not suit this choice. The hard tyres? They were definitely slower than the soft ones and lacked grip, which made the car a bit inconsistent in terms of balance."

"Ich hatte ein phantastisches Rennwochenende und bin heute sehr froh. Beim Start kam ich sogar etwas besser weg als die Autos vor mir. Dann bin ich nach außen gezogen, und Heikki Kovalainen ist mir leider ins Auto gefahren. Das kann passieren, ich war froh, dass mein Auto nicht weiter beschädigt war, aber natürlich habe ich einige Plätze verloren. Später konnte ich ein paar Autos wieder überholen, aber dann hing ich im Verkehr fest. Als es begann zu nieseln, war ich überzeugt, dass der Regen in der nächsten Runde stärker werden würde und habe mich entschieden, auf Regenreifen zu wechseln. Das Team hat nochmals nachgefragt, ob ich das auch ernst meine. Als ich dann aus der Boxengasse fuhr, habe ich gefragt, wie viele Runden es noch wären. Mein Ingenieur sagte mir, diese und noch eine. Ich sah weit und breit kein Auto und dachte schon, oh Mann, das war wohl die falsche Entscheidung, aber dann hat sie sich doch ausgezahlt. Es war eine Frage von Sekt oder Selters."

Lewis Hamilton, McLaren Mercedes (3.Platz):
"That was one of the most exciting races of my whole career – it was incredibly tough. My spin on lap two put me on the back foot for the rest of the race, but I could see Kimi ahead and I was just pushing, pushing, pushing to close that gap, hoping he would catch traffic and allow me to get nearer. When the heavens opened, Kimi was a little cautious under braking and I was able to get really close. When I had a look around the outside at the chicane, we almost had an accident, and I needed to steer left to avoid him. As we crossed the start/finish line, I left him the space to get back ahead and then managed to get my car up the inside at La Source."

Fernando Alonso, Renault (4.Platz):
"We finished fourth after a difficult race with plenty of incidents. It’s a good result for the team, especially for our position in the championship because our objective was to score some important points. We missed out on a podium today, but we have shown that we can be the third strongest team in the championship."

Sebastian Vettel, Scuderia Toro Rosso (5.Platz):
"Both me and Seb have good reason to smile after a race like that. The last lap was unbelievable and I was shocked as I got passed in the last fifty metres and then Heidfeld followed by Alonso drove past me with a “whoosh” on their intermediates. It was very tricky at the end and you really had to trust your car. We were all saying that Eau Rouge and Blanchimont are now flat, but with a few drops of rain, I tell you, you see the real nature of these corners. Overall it was a fantastic race, even though I was stuck in traffic for a while. But I was very happy with the car and we had a very strong pace today. The guys at the front are still in a different dimension, but we have made some good steps forward and now it is up to us to use that potential at the next few races."

Robert Kubica, BMW - Sauber (6.Platz):
"Ich bin nicht zufrieden mit dem Resultat. Ich hatte heute die Möglichkeit, aufs Podium zu fahren. Wir hatten jedoch ein Problem während des zweiten Boxenstopps. Ich verlor zwei oder drei Positionen und kam hinter Nick zurück auf die Strecke. Als es zu regnen begann, fuhr er in die Box und wechselte die Reifen. Das hätte bei mir zu viel Zeit gekostet. Ich war ja direkt hinter Nick, wir wären praktisch gleichzeitig angekommen. Ich hatte darüber hinaus keine Informationen zum Wetter, weil es Probleme mit dem Funk gab. Leider haben wir Punkte verschenkt. Naja, das ist Rennsport."

Sebastien Bourdais, Scuderia Toro Rosso (7.Platz):
"On the last lap it was a lottery with the car getting away from you with every turn of the wheel. It’s a horrible situation, as everything had been under control up until then. But I am not in a situation where I can risk everything and at the end of the race I didn’t even know where I finished. It was so close to being a great result I felt I could almost touch it and so it was a very frustrating way to finish what was a great weekend up to that point. Such a shame, but nevertheless a very strong result for the team."

"The first few laps were quite tricky due to the conditions, but our start was okay. I was running a bit short and when doing that it helps to have a clear track, but I didn’t. I lost some time behind Bourdais, who was a bit heavier, but we were still in a reasonable position. Then I got hit by Heikki (Kovalainen) and lost some time. It hurt our strategy, which was quite aggressive. The car felt best in the last stint on the prime tyres."

"I had quite a tricky race but I am pleased with a point because for a long time today it looked like we would not be able to achieve that. I have to say thank you to the team, especially the guys who work on the starts because it was mega for both cars and in the last couple of races they have done a perfect job. I couldn't make up as many places as I wanted at the first corner because I saw Sébastien Bourdais slide into Jarno and I thought there would be a mess so I tried to stay out of it. Then for the first couple of laps I couldn't get any heat into the tyres. I struggled quite a lot and lost a few places. When the rain started I made the decision to come in and change to standard wet tyres and it was the right thing to do. It was not easy but I just got past Mark Webber in the last corner and took the final point."

Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren Mercedes (10.Platz):
"I got squeezed between two cars at the first corner, and it cost me a lot of places. But I knew I had the car to claw things back and was making good progress until I came up alongside Mark Webber at the final chicane. I knew I was faster than him, but maybe he didn’t realise I was on the inside and we touched, spinning him in front of me. That’s racing. It was a racing accident, but it earned me a drive-through penalty and knocked me back down the field. Still, my pace was good on the prime tyre, and I still managed to overtake quite a few cars. In the last few laps I thought I could take advantage of the damp conditions until I started to lose gears. In the end, the gearbox failed on the very last lap and I had to stop."

David Coulthard, Red Bull Racing (11.Platz):
"I got held up a lot behind the Hondas at the start and it was hard to make up positions from there. We have poor drivability. The changeable conditions made things interesting at the end, we could probably have changed to intermediate tyres one lap earlier."

Nico Rosberg, Williams - Toyota (12.Platz):
"It wasn’t such an exciting race for me today. Ultimately I did the best I could from where I
started and the performance we had in the car and, I think adding all this up, 12 th is
probably about the best we could have achieved. At the end of the race we had to make
the difficult judgement to come in for the wet tyres, and although we didn’t make any
gain, I still think it was a good decision to take. Overall then, it wasn’t a good weekend
for us and now we need to look forward to Monza and try to improve things. After the
recent test there we are confident that it is a track that will suit us better."

Adrian Sutil, Force India (13.Platz):
"It was a strong race for us, with a good performance. We had quite a lot of fights on the
circuit and lots of overtaking. I caught up with Button and was right behind him, but then there
was the rain in the last laps. As there were just a couple of laps left and we were quite quick
on the wet conditions with dry tyres, we stayed out and I could pass him and some other
guys. I am quite happy with this race."

Kazuki Nakajima, Williams - Toyota (14.Platz):
"Today was a difficult race for me. I had a bit of contact in the first corner which cost me
some time, so from then on I just tried to maintain a consistent pace because I was on a
one-stop strategy. Given this, I think my race pace was not bad compared with those
around me. I made some progress during the race, then just at the end, the rain came
and it was a tough call to either to stay on the slicks or try to see what the wets might do
for us. In the end we made the stop and changed the tyres, but we didn’t have enough
time to make up any ground."

Jenson Button, Honda (15.Platz):
"It's been a tough weekend and unfortunately the car's performance has been a long way off where I thought we would be here in Spa. I didn't have a great start from 17th and got completely boxed in with cars everywhere that I wanted to go. I then lost some time in the train of cars caught behind Rubens when he had his gearbox problem. The car was not handling well at all throughout the first stint as I had no grip and very little balance. So when I came in and switched to the prime tyre, we added front wing which I thought we needed, but not having had the the opportunity to compare the two tyres yesterday, this unfortunately gave me too much front end. Our rear tyre pressures were also too low which made the car very difficult to drive."

Janro Trulli, Toyota (16.Platz):
"I was very unlucky because I had a great start and from 11th I was in the top six, but I was hit really hard from the back and this damaged the car. After that the car was undrivable and on top of that the accident caused a gearbox problem, so my only target was to finish the race. Once again I wasn't very lucky here - it seems to happen too often at Spa that I am competitive but I have bad luck. I was hoping we could have a strong race and score some points. This was possible because we had a competitive strategy and a great start so it's a shame that we couldn't manage to do it."

Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India (17.Platz):
"Unfortunately Nakajima spun and came across in front of my car and I broke the front wing
and damaged the car quite a lot. Coming back to the pits I lost a lot of time as I had no front
wing and punctured tyres. Unfortunately when I went out of the pitlane I was just in front of the
leaders and then had blue flags at least 40 times! Towards the end of the race, looking at the
weather I called the box and said I wanted to put on the rain tyres. It was the right choice but
there were just two or three laps left and it would have been nice to have those conditions
earlier, but I think considering the start the end result was not too bad."

Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari (18.Platz):
"I came here to win and I came close. In the final laps the track conditions were very critical and unfortunately, I ran wide and when I tried to get back on track, I spun and ended up in the wall. It was a shame because today the car was working really well. I got a good start and managed to pass Felipe on the straight and then overtook Hamilton when he spun at the start of the second lap. On the soft tyres, I could run at a good pace, while the final set, the harder ones, was not quite there - definitely not as good in performance terms as those I'd used in the past couple of days - and the balance of the car was not as good as earlier. The arrival of the rain definitely did not help. In these conditions, if you are in front you have to be more cautious as you don't know how much grip you'll find in each braking area. That's how Hamilton managed to close on me and then happened what you all saw. It's the second race in a row that I've failed to score points. Clearly the championship situation is what it is, but I'm not the sort to give up that easily."

Rubens Barrichello, Honda (Ausgefallen):
"The race was actually going quite well for me but unfortunately I lost sixth gear not long after I overtook Trulli. I tried to keep going but with the way that the gearbox works, you have to go through sixth gear before you can get seventh gear, which caused over-revving of the engine and the potential for significant damage. The team decided it would be best to retire the car as this is my first race with this engine and I have to race with it at Monza next weekend. Overall it has not been a great weekend. Our biggest problem has been our struggle to get temperature into the tyres, which affected our performance very badly."

Nelson Piquet jr., Renault (Ausgefallen):
"The plan was to run a one-stop strategy today and so my car was heavy on fuel. I made a good start and gained five places, which was encouraging, but there were still some damp patches on the circuit and I made a mistake. It’s a shame because I’m sure we could have done something today. I want to remain positive and I’m now looking forward to Monza, where we tested last week. I hope we can have a strong race there."
