Der Spanier Fernando Alonso, von Startplatz Sechzehn aus gestartet, gewann das unglaublich spannende und ereignisreiche Rennen in Singapur, das erstmals in der Geschichte der Formel1 nachts gestartet wurde. Hinter dem zweifachen Weltmeister wurde Nico Rosberg im Williams Zweiter vor McLaren Mercedes Pilot Lewis Hamilton. Timo Glock wurde im Toyota Vierter vor Sebastian Vettel (Toro Rosso) und Nick Heidfeld (BMW – Sauber). Hinter dem deutschen Trio erreichte David Coulthard im Red Bull vor Kazuki Nakajima im Williams als Siebter die Ziellinie. Neunter wurde Jenson Button (Honda) vor Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren Mercedes), Robert Kubica (BMW – Sauber) und Sebastien Bourdais (Toro Rosso). Felipe Massa wurde im Ferrari nach einem katastrophalen Boxenstopp und einer Durchfahrtsstrafe lediglich Dreizehnter vor Giancarlo Fisichella im Force India, der als Letzter die Zielflagge sah. Kimi Räikkönen wurde noch als Fünfzehnter gewertet. Vier Runden vor Rennende verließen dem Finnen die Kräfte und die Konzentration und krachte aus Position Fünf liegend in die Streckenbegrenzung. Adrian Sutil (Force India) krachte Zwölf Runden vor Rennende nach einer beinahe Kollision mit Felipe Massa ebenfalls in die Seitenbegrenzung. Jarno Trulli musste mit einem technischen Defekt in der 50. Runde das Rennen beenden, wie auch der Australier Mark Webber (Runde 29) und Rubens Barrichello (Runde 14). Nelson Piquet löste mit seinem Einschlag in die Streckenbegrenzung mit der anschließenden Safetycar Phase ein Chaos aus und verhalf, sicherlich ungewollt, seinem Teamkollegen Fernando Alonso zum Sieg.
Das erste Rennen in der Geschichte der Formel1 unter Flutlicht passte sich in den letzten interessanten und spannenden Rennen in Monza und Belgien nahtlos an. Auch in Singapur sorgten die Akteure für Spannung pur. Schon die Startaufstellung versprach ein spannendes Rennen zu werden.
Über diesen Monaco – Ähnlichen Straßenschluchten Kurs mussten die 20 Formel1 Piloten 61 Runden drehen, angeführt von Felipe Massa, der nur einen WM – Punkt hinter Lewis Hamilton lag, der jedoch von Startplatz zwei aus ins Rennen ging. Dahinter Weltmeister Kimi Räikkönen vor Robert Kubica im BMW _ Sauber und Heikki Kovalainen im zweiten McLaren Mercedes. Der Monza – Sieger 2008, Sebastian Vettel erreichte im Qualifying Startplatz Sechs vor seinen Landsleuten Timo Glock (Toyota), Nico Rosberg (Williams) und Nick Heidfeld (BMW – Sauber). Zwar konnte sich Heidfeld als Sechster Qualifizieren, musste jedoch wegen einer Strafe drei Plätze zurück auf den Neunten Startplatz. Fernando Alonso Startete nur von Position Fünfzehn, nachdem sein Renault beim Qualifying den Dienst verweigerte. Giancarlo Fisichella, der von Startplatz 20 aus gestartet wäre, startete das Rennen von der Boxengasse aus.
Fast alle 20 Akteure kamen nach dem Start sehr gut in die ersten Kurve. Lediglich Robert Kubica kollidierte leicht mit Heikki Kovalainen, der daraufhin auf den Siebten Platz zurück fiel. Fernando Alonso kam schon in der Dreizehnten Runde zum Boxenstopp, was ein wirklich genialer Zug der Strategen von Renault war. So konnte Fernando Alonso erstens die weicheren Reifen beim Start des Rennens schon mal aufziehen und danach mit den besseren, sprich härteren Reifen das Rennen fortsetzen. Des weiteren hielt Renault somit Alonso aus dem Verkehr heraus und diese konnte ungestört seine Runden drehen. Außerdem kam noch der Unfall von Teamkollege Nelson Piquet jr. hinzu, der dem Spanier alle Trümpfe in die Hand spielte. In der 14. Runde, gerade als Alonso seinen Stopp beendete und die anderen Piloten sich zum Boxenstopp fertig machten, krachte Piquet nach einem Dreher heftig in die Streckenbegrenzung. Jedoch hatte sich Piquet glücklicherweise nicht verletzt.
Dies war jedoch ein harter Schlag für die Strategen von Williams und BMW – Sauber. Bei Nico Rosberg, sowie bei Robert Kubica ging der Sprit aus uns mussten zwangsweise an die Box, obwohl diese noch gesperrt war. Die bedeutete für beide Piloten eine zehn Sekunden Stop-and-go Strafe.
Als dann endlich die Box öffnete, kamen fast alle Fahrer zum Tanken an die Box, allem voran Felipe Massa, der bis dahin das Rennen beherrschte. Direkt hinter dem Brasilianer musste Kimi Räikkönen auf dessen Abfertigung warten. Als dann die Ampel (Ferrari verwendete bis dahin eine Ampel statt eines Mechaniker, der dem Fahrer mit einem so genannten Lollipop anzeigt, ob dieser Fahren darf) auf Grün schaltete, waren die Mechaniker mit dem Tanken noch nicht fertig. Felipe Massa bemerkte zuerst nichts von dieser Panne und startete durch. Dabei riss er den kompletten Tankschlauch mit und verletzte dabei einen Ferrari – Mechaniker. Am Ende der Boxengasse blieb Felipe Massa dann stehen, um auf seine Mechaniker zu warten, die den Schlauch vom Tankstutzen nehmen sollten. Erst fast eine Minute später kamen dann endlich seine Leute und entfernten mit viel Kraft und einigen Problemen den Schlauch, so dass Felipe Massa weiter fahren konnte. Jedoch war ab diesem Zeitpunkt das Rennen für den Brasilianischen Titelanwärter schon vorbei. Das Felipe Massa auch noch eine Durchfahrtsstrafe wegen gefährlicher Fahrweise in der Boxengasse während dieser Aktion mit dem Tankschlauch erhielt, machte seine Chancen auf wenigstens ein paar Pünktchen vollends zu nichte.
Während diesem Chaos profitierte vor Allem Fernando Alonso vom Unfallpech seines Teamkollegen und von seinem frühen Boxenstopp. Auch Mark Webber, David Coulthard und Rubens Barrichello kamen noch vor dem Unfall zum Tanken rein. Rubens Barrichello musste jedoch nach seinem Boxenstopp seinen Honda mit einem Defekt abstellen und das Rennen in der Fünfzehnten Runde beenden.
Als dann das Safety – Car die Strecke wieder frei gab, führte Nico Rosberg im Williams, der seine Strafe noch nicht abgesessen hatte, vor Jarno Trulli im Toyota, der wie auch Giancarlo Fisichella im Force India, der auf Position drei lag, noch nicht zum Tanken in der Box war. Felipe Massa war zu diesem Zeitpunkt Letzter und musste ebenfalls noch seine Strafe absitzen. Als Nico Rosberg dann seine zehn Sekundenstrafe ab saß, übernahm Jarno Trulli kurzfristig die Führung vor Force India Piloten Giancarlo Fisichella.
Mark Webber musste in der 29. Runde wegen eines Getriebeschadens wieder an die Box und stieg kurze Zeit später aus. Das frühzeitige Ende für den Australier.
Als Felipe Massa in der 31. Runde erneut zum Tanken kam, setzte Ferrari wieder einen Lollipop – Mann ein und setzte auf altbewährtes, statt auf dieser Ampel zu setzen, erfolgreich, denn Massa konnte diesen Stopp ohne Schwierigkeiten alsolvieren.
Als dann Jarno Trulli in der 33. Runde, eine Runde nach Fisichella an die Box zum Tanken kam, übernahm Fernando Alonso, der von Startplatz Fünfzehn aus gestartet war, die Führung vor Nico Rosberg und David Coulthard. Zwar verlor Nico Rosberg nach seinem regulär zweiten Stopp fünf Plätze, konnte sich aber diese später, nach den Stopps seiner Konkurrenten wieder holen.
Als Fernando Alonso in der 41. Runde an die Box kam, hatte dieser so viel Vorsprung, dass er noch vor dem, zu diesem Zeitpunkt auf Platz zwei liegenden David Coulthard und dessen Verfolger Lewis Hamilton raus kam. Hamilton hatte nach der Safety Car Phase eine schlechte Position und hing Runden lang im Mittelfeld hinter David Coulthard fest. Als dann Coulthard und Hamilton gleichzeitig an die Box kamen, musste sich die McLaren Crew beeilen, um ihren Fahrer vor Coulthard zu bekommen. Diese Eile war jedoch nicht von Nöten, denn auch hier, wie beim Stopp von Massa, klemmte der Tankschlauch, und Coulthard fuhr zu früh los, bzw. wurde zu früh wieder losgeschickt. Im Gegensatz zu Massa, konnte der vorhandene Lolipop – Mann dem Fahrer unmissverständlich klar machen, nicht weiter zu fahren, was bei Ferrari mit der Ampel nicht funktionieren kann, da der Fahrer nach dem Grün nicht mehr auf die Ampel schaut.
In der 43. Runde schlugen die Herzen der deutschen Formel1 – Fans sehr schnell. Hinter dem führenden Fernando Alonso lag Timo Glock auf Position Zwei vor Sebastian Vettel, Nick Heidfeld und Nico Rosberg. Leider mussten alle Deutschen Piloten, bis auf Rosberg noch zum Tanken an die Box.
Für Jarno Trulli war in der 50. Runde das Rennen mit einem Getriebeschaden beendet. Fast hätte auch Felipe Massa im Ferrari Elf Runden vor Rennende Feierabend gehabt. Nach einem Verbremser blieb Massa am äußeren rechten Rand einer Rechtskurve stehen. Als dann Massa wieder durchstartete, hätte dieser fast Adrian Sutil im Force India abgeschossen, der beim Ausweichen selber in der Streckenbegrenzung landete. Das Aus für Sutil. Diese Aktion von Massa hatte offensichtlich keine Strafe zur Folge.
Als dann das Safety Car erneut die Strecke verlassen und das Rennen wieder freigeben konnte, waren noch Acht Runden zu fahren. Fernando Alonso, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt als einziger die härtere Reifenmischung aufgezogen hatte, konnte seiner Konkurrenz locker davon fahren und in den letzten drei Runden sogar extrem langsam machen.
Kimi Räikkönen indes machte keineswegs langsam und erhöhte den Druck auf Timo Glock, der auf Position vier hinter Hamilton und Rosberg lag. Räikkönen verlor dabei die Konzentration und die Kontrolle über seinen Ferrari und schlug vier Runden vor Rennende in die Streckenbegrenzung ein. Dieses Mal musste jedoch das Rennen nicht durch ein Safety Car unterbrochen werden. Knapp vor der zwei Stunden Grenze (nach spätestens zwei Stunden muss ein Rennen abgebrochen werden) kam dann mit einer Zeit von 1:57:16,304 Fernando Alonso als erster Sieger eines Nachtrennens ins Ziel. Zweiter wurde mit einer Phantastischen Leistung und trotz einer zehn Sekunden Strafe Nico Rosberg vor Lewis Hamilton, der seinen Vorsprung in der WM auf sieben Punkte ausbauen konnte. Vierter wurde Timo Glock im Toyota vor Sebastian Vettel im Toro Rosso. Nick Heidfeld komplettierte die deutschen Punkte mit Platz Sechs. Siebter wurde David Coulthard vor Kazuki Nakajima, Jenson Button und Heikki Kovalainen. Robert Kubica wurde Elfter vor Sebastien Bourdais, Felipe Massa und Giancarlo Fisichella. Kimi Räikkönen wurde noch als Fünfzehnter gewertet.
In der WM führt nun Lewis Hamilton mit 84 Punkten vor Felipe Massa mit 77 Punkten. Nick Heidfeld kam bis auf einen Punkt an Weltmeister Kimi Räikkönen (57 Punkte) ran. Fernando Alonso kommt nun auf 38 WM – Punkte und Sebastian Vettel überholte Jarno Trulli in der Fahrerwertung. In der Teamwertung leigt nun McLaren Mercedes mit 135 Punkten vor Ferrari (134 Punkte) und BMW – Sauber (120 Punkte). Renault überholte nach dem Sieg von Alonso Toyota und liegt nun mit 51 Punkten auf Platz Vier.

Fernando Alonso, Renault (Sieger):
"This is a fantastic result – my first podium of the season; my first victory and I’m very happy, although I think it will take several days for me to realise what we have achieved. Wining a Grand Prix here just seemed to be impossible because we missed our chance yesterday in qualifying, but we were very fortunate today and it’s a superb result for the team. We chose a very aggressive strategy and we had a bit of luck, but we had the pace and the car was fantastic throughout the weekend."

Nico Rosberg, Williams - Toyota (2.Platz):
"It was a race of so many ups and downs for me. It started badly as I ended up behind a
heavy Jarno Trulli and I absolutely had to get by him to allow my strategy to work. It was
quite a hairy moment getting past because it is so bumpy to outbrake at turn 7 and I
couldn’t get close at turn 1, the only two places where overtaking is possible. Anyway,
having eventually cleared him, I couldn’t believe it when I saw that the safety car had
come out just after the team had called me in for my stop and I thought that’s the end of
it. Before my stop-go penalty, I just had to push like mad and do qualifying lap after
qualifying lap and I managed to build enough of a gap to complete my second stop and
hold on to second place. With a handful or laps to go in the most physical race this year
and a car in your mirrors, time goes amazingly slowly, but for once everything went our
way. I think Frank will have to wear his lucky tartan trousers again!"

Lewis Hamilton, McLaren Mercedes (3.Platz):
"A positive end to a difficult weekend at this fantastic new venue. I started well, but then my rear tyres faded and, although we had good pace, I wasn't in a position to challenge Felipe ahead of me. During my first pit stop I lost a bit of time because everybody came in due to the Safety Car period. After that I was unfortunately stuck behind David and although I was clearly faster it was really difficult to overtake him. After the second re-start, I tried to stay as close as possible behind Nico; however, I didn't want to take chances - particularly as the Ferraris were outside the points. Also, this is not a track where overtaking is easy. The first night race in Formula 1 history was great fun, and I now look forward to the forthcoming double-header in Japan and China."

Timo Glock, Toyota (4.Platz):
"I am happy with the job I did; I made no mistakes and fourth is a good result. It was quite tough out there in these conditions and with such a bumpy track the car was not very comfortable to drive; I am sure I will feel the effects tomorrow. My goal at the beginning of the year was to score 20 points this season so I am very satisfied to achieve that with three races still to go. However, I am fighting for the team to help them finish fourth in the Constructors' Championship and we were a bit unlucky with that today, but congratulations to Fernando, who did a great job. Now we will go to Fuji and aim to recover the lost ground."

Sebastian Vettel, Scuderia Toro Rosso (5.Platz):
"Overall, this was a good race for us, even if the Safety Car didn’t help. It was a difficult race for everyone, but the important thing is we have scored some more points. The hardest elements in the race were dealing with the heat and concentrating not to make any mistakes, as it could be very easy to clip a kerb. I tried to keep the car on track but still push like crazy. It was one of the toughest races of the season, but I think with everything that happened, this was the best result we could get. Maybe fourth might have been possible if I hadn’t lost a place to Timo (Glock) when I missed a braking point, but we can be happy with this fifth place"

Nick Heidfeld, BMW - Sauber (6.Platz):
"Obwohl man sich im Grunde nicht beschweren kann, wenn man von Startplatz neun aus Sechster wird, finde ich es unheimlich schade, dass ich heute keine Chance hatte, meinen wahren Speed zu zeigen. Mein Auto war sehr gut, und ich hätte viel schneller fahren können, wenn ich nicht ständig im Verkehr festgesteckt hätte. Ich habe sogar Sprit gespart und die Reifen geschont, weil ich hoffte, dass die anderen sich ihre Reifen ruinieren und ich dann später angreifen kann. Einige hatten später auch Probleme mit ihren Reifen, aber mein Vorteil hat trotzdem nicht für einen Angriff gereicht. Mein Start war gut, ich habe es immerhin an Nico Rosberg vorbei geschafft. Jedenfalls habe ich kaum geschwitzt, weil mein Rennen einfach nicht anstrengend war."

David Coulthard, Red Bull Racing (7.Platz):
"That was my second points finish this year, so I’ve got to be happy with today’s result. As far as the second pit stop went, the guys have been great this year and the work that they did on Saturday morning to get my car out so I could do a run was quite remarkable, so I’m not going to point any fingers at them. It’s just one of those things. There was a misunderstanding between some of the guys and I go when the lollipop comes up, but these things happen. Thankfully we got some points today. It was incredibly bumpy out there, you can’t see the braking down into Turn Seven and it was as hot as hell."

Kazuki Nakajima, Williams - Toyota (8.Platz):
"It was a great day for the team, returning to form and of course congratulations to Nico.
As far as my race was concerned, the Safety Car timing was a little bit unfortunate, but I
just had to push my race pace on regardless of what happened and overtake a few cars,
and in the end, it was great to claim a point for the first time in a while. Hopefully today
showed potential which we can try to maintain for the rest of the season"

Jenson Button, Honda (9.Platz):
"Heute war eines der Rennen, bei denen Glück und der Zeitpunkt der Safety Car-Phasen über dein Schicksal bestimmen“, meinte Jenson. „Leider war das Glück nicht auf unserer Seite, und das Timing der beiden Safety Car-Phasen machte unsere Zwei-Stopp-Strategie zunichte. Außerdem waren wir einfach nicht leistungsstark oder schnell genug, da ich das meiste Rennen über Probleme mit der Balance hatte. Die 9. Position ist immer besonders frustrierend, da man die Punkte nur knapp verpasst hat."

Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren Mercedes (10.Platz):
"I made a good start and was going to pass Kubica round the outside at the first two corners. Unfortunately he touched me and almost spun me around. My underfloor was slightly damaged as a result. I lost momentum and two cars overtook me. When the safety car came out and the pitlane was opened a couple of laps later, Lewis and I came in and I had to wait behind him until it was my turn. It then was a strange race and most of the time I was in traffic with no overtaking chances. Halfway through the race I had brake problems and had to conserve them until the finish. I’m happy for Lewis and the team now that he has extended the championship lead and we are on top of the Constructors’ rankings. I will now go for it in the next races and help to make sure that we stay ahead in both championships."

Robert Kubica, BMW - Sauber (11.Platz):
"Das Rennen war physisch sehr hart. Es gibt hier so viele Bodenwellen, ich hoffe wirklich, dass die Veranstalter an dem Streckenbelag fürs nächste Jahr etwas tun werden. Außerdem wurde die Sicht immer schlechter, weil ich müde wurde. Während der letzten 15 Runden hatte ich fürchterliche Kopfschmerzen. Die Entscheidung, nicht gleich in der ersten Runde, während die Boxengasse geschlossen war, zum Tanken zu kommen, war unglücklich und hat mich das Rennen gekostet, weil die anderen Autos hinter mir die Lücke schließen konnten. Das Team hoffte natürlich, dass die Boxengasse rasch wieder geöffnet würde, aber das war eben nicht so. So etwas gehört zum Rennsport."

Sebastien Bourdais, Scuderia Toro Rosso (12.Platz):
"It was a tough race. When I was running on my own my brake balance was fine, but once I was in traffic I kept losing the front end, even with all the brake bias on the rear. I know it was difficult to pass here, but I was even having difficulty following other cars and didn’t know where my limit was. It was a really tough race physically too, given how long it was and the lack of air coming through the cockpit and with a long last stint, I was running a heavy fuel load which meant my tyres were suffering towards the end. It’s been a long night."

Felipe Massa, Ferrari (13.Platz):
"It's hard to deal with losing in this fashion a race that was within our grasp, with a car that was just the way I wanted it. We had a good strategy and all the signs were there that we could get a one-two finish. But things can change in a moment and that's what happened today. At the pit stop, one of the guys made a mistake. But we are only human. Each one of us always tries to do our best and these things can happen. With the Safety Car still on track, I didn't lose a lap, but then I got a drive-through and later I also picked up a puncture in the left rear. On this track it is almost impossible to overtake and ending up at the back meant I had not chance of getting into the points. Seven points to make up in three races? That can be a lot or it can be a little. We have the potential to do well, as we saw today and we will give it our best shot. We mustn't give up and I'm sure we won't."

Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India (14.Platz):
"It was a long, hard race, but I have to say we really did the maximum possible. A big thank
you to everyone on the team who did such a fantastic job to get the car going again after the
accidents yesterday and for giving me a car we could really race with. It was great to be back
racing again and I think we had a good strategy that let us move up a few places. In the final
few laps I had a small problem, but I'm really pleased we could get to the finish."

Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari (15.Platz):
"I was trying to attack Glock in case he might make a mistake, but I went slightly wide at the chicane, jumping over the kerb and when the car landed, I lost control and ended up in the barriers. My situation in the championship was already rather compromised, so this doesn't really make that much difference but I am unhappy because the team has lost precious points in the Constructors' classification. In the opening laps, the car was a bit difficult but then it improved a lot, to such an extent that I was able to close right up to Hamilton. When the Safety Car came out, I know my race was compromised given that I had to pit behind Felipe. I was able to get back up to fifth but then the incident I described earlier happened. Clearly, morale is not high today. But I am not used to giving up and will do my very best to try and help the team reach its targets."

Janro Trulli, Toyota (Ausgefallen):
"The race was going pretty well, I was on a one-stop strategy and I made a good start. After the safety car, I was one of the quickest on the track and I led the race for several laps. But in the end a weekend which started pretty bad has finished even worse. I had a hydraulic problem when I would have finished in fifth; that would have been good points from a weekend which has been quite hard for me. I am exhausted because I am so disappointed. I have been fighting really hard and doing a good job but when that bad luck comes you can't do anything about it. I think I am owed a lot of good luck after that."

Adrian Sutil, Force India (Ausgefallen):
"I think it was a good race as the race pace was good and I felt really confident in the car. We
lost a little in the first safety car period as we were a little too late coming into the pits but after
that it was nice to be able to push. It was just so unlucky when Felipe spun in front of me and
then suddenly pulled away. The way was blocked, but I avoided a crash with him only to go
into the barrier myself. It's really disappointing as we've had so much bad luck already this
year. It's Fuji next though, which I really enjoy and know I can perform well on."

Mark Webber, Red Bull Racing (Ausgefallen):
"I lost seventh and then fifth gear, which cost us a fantastic result, as I was stopping for my second pit stop later than Fernando (Alonso). It would have been nice to share the podium with him today, with him winning and me second. We got a bit lucky with the safety car, but in the end it didn’t work out. We had some good pace in the second stint and it was looking good. Overall, the event here has been very impressive, I think we should do more night racing."

Rubens Barrichello, Honda (Ausgefallen):
"Da ich aus Position 18 starten musste, hatten wir natürlich auf eine Gelegenheit gehofft, meine Position verbessern zu können“, sagte Rubens. „Diese Chance ergab sich in Runde 14, als mich mein Ingenieur nach Piquets Unfall anfunkte. Ich fuhr an die Box, kurz bevor das Safety Car herausgerufen wurde. Als ich wieder auf die Strecke kam, wäre ich in einer guten Position gewesen. Aber dann ist leider der Motor kaputt gegangen. Ich hatte viel Treibstoff geladen und meine Position war toll, da ich schnell war und mit der Spitzengruppe vor mir mithalten konnte. Wir hätten bestimmt ein tolles Ergebnis erzielen können. Wir haben heute eine tolle Chance verpasst, und ich bin natürlich sehr enttäuscht"

Nelson Piquet jr., Renault (Ausgefallen):
"From the start of the race things were complicated and I had a lot of graining and the situation got worse and worse. Das erste Rennen in der Geschichte der Formel1 unter Flutlicht passte sich in den letzten interessanten und spannenden Rennen in Monza und Belgien nahtlos an. Auch in Singapur sorgten die Akteure für Spannung pur. Schon die Startaufstellung versprach ein spannendes Rennen zu werden.
Über diesen Monaco – Ähnlichen Straßenschluchten Kurs mussten die 20 Formel1 Piloten 61 Runden drehen, angeführt von Felipe Massa, der nur einen WM – Punkt hinter Lewis Hamilton lag, der jedoch von Startplatz zwei aus ins Rennen ging. Dahinter Weltmeister Kimi Räikkönen vor Robert Kubica im BMW _ Sauber und Heikki Kovalainen im zweiten McLaren Mercedes. Der Monza – Sieger 2008, Sebastian Vettel erreichte im Qualifying Startplatz Sechs vor seinen Landsleuten Timo Glock (Toyota), Nico Rosberg (Williams) und Nick Heidfeld (BMW – Sauber). Zwar konnte sich Heidfeld als Sechster Qualifizieren, musste jedoch wegen einer Strafe drei Plätze zurück auf den Neunten Startplatz. Fernando Alonso Startete nur von Position Fünfzehn, nachdem sein Renault beim Qualifying den Dienst verweigerte. Giancarlo Fisichella, der von Startplatz 20 aus gestartet wäre, startete das Rennen von der Boxengasse aus.
Fast alle 20 Akteure kamen nach dem Start sehr gut in die ersten Kurve. Lediglich Robert Kubica kollidierte leicht mit Heikki Kovalainen, der daraufhin auf den Siebten Platz zurück fiel. Fernando Alonso kam schon in der Dreizehnten Runde zum Boxenstopp, was ein wirklich genialer Zug der Strategen von Renault war. So konnte Fernando Alonso erstens die weicheren Reifen beim Start des Rennens schon mal aufziehen und danach mit den besseren, sprich härteren Reifen das Rennen fortsetzen. Des weiteren hielt Renault somit Alonso aus dem Verkehr heraus und diese konnte ungestört seine Runden drehen. Außerdem kam noch der Unfall von Teamkollege Nelson Piquet jr. hinzu, der dem Spanier alle Trümpfe in die Hand spielte. In der 14. Runde, gerade als Alonso seinen Stopp beendete und die anderen Piloten sich zum Boxenstopp fertig machten, krachte Piquet nach einem Dreher heftig in die Streckenbegrenzung. Jedoch hatte sich Piquet glücklicherweise nicht verletzt.
Dies war jedoch ein harter Schlag für die Strategen von Williams und BMW – Sauber. Bei Nico Rosberg, sowie bei Robert Kubica ging der Sprit aus uns mussten zwangsweise an die Box, obwohl diese noch gesperrt war. Die bedeutete für beide Piloten eine zehn Sekunden Stop-and-go Strafe.
Als dann endlich die Box öffnete, kamen fast alle Fahrer zum Tanken an die Box, allem voran Felipe Massa, der bis dahin das Rennen beherrschte. Direkt hinter dem Brasilianer musste Kimi Räikkönen auf dessen Abfertigung warten. Als dann die Ampel (Ferrari verwendete bis dahin eine Ampel statt eines Mechaniker, der dem Fahrer mit einem so genannten Lollipop anzeigt, ob dieser Fahren darf) auf Grün schaltete, waren die Mechaniker mit dem Tanken noch nicht fertig. Felipe Massa bemerkte zuerst nichts von dieser Panne und startete durch. Dabei riss er den kompletten Tankschlauch mit und verletzte dabei einen Ferrari – Mechaniker. Am Ende der Boxengasse blieb Felipe Massa dann stehen, um auf seine Mechaniker zu warten, die den Schlauch vom Tankstutzen nehmen sollten. Erst fast eine Minute später kamen dann endlich seine Leute und entfernten mit viel Kraft und einigen Problemen den Schlauch, so dass Felipe Massa weiter fahren konnte. Jedoch war ab diesem Zeitpunkt das Rennen für den Brasilianischen Titelanwärter schon vorbei. Das Felipe Massa auch noch eine Durchfahrtsstrafe wegen gefährlicher Fahrweise in der Boxengasse während dieser Aktion mit dem Tankschlauch erhielt, machte seine Chancen auf wenigstens ein paar Pünktchen vollends zu nichte.
Während diesem Chaos profitierte vor Allem Fernando Alonso vom Unfallpech seines Teamkollegen und von seinem frühen Boxenstopp. Auch Mark Webber, David Coulthard und Rubens Barrichello kamen noch vor dem Unfall zum Tanken rein. Rubens Barrichello musste jedoch nach seinem Boxenstopp seinen Honda mit einem Defekt abstellen und das Rennen in der Fünfzehnten Runde beenden.
Als dann das Safety – Car die Strecke wieder frei gab, führte Nico Rosberg im Williams, der seine Strafe noch nicht abgesessen hatte, vor Jarno Trulli im Toyota, der wie auch Giancarlo Fisichella im Force India, der auf Position drei lag, noch nicht zum Tanken in der Box war. Felipe Massa war zu diesem Zeitpunkt Letzter und musste ebenfalls noch seine Strafe absitzen. Als Nico Rosberg dann seine zehn Sekundenstrafe ab saß, übernahm Jarno Trulli kurzfristig die Führung vor Force India Piloten Giancarlo Fisichella.
Mark Webber musste in der 29. Runde wegen eines Getriebeschadens wieder an die Box und stieg kurze Zeit später aus. Das frühzeitige Ende für den Australier.
Als Felipe Massa in der 31. Runde erneut zum Tanken kam, setzte Ferrari wieder einen Lollipop – Mann ein und setzte auf altbewährtes, statt auf dieser Ampel zu setzen, erfolgreich, denn Massa konnte diesen Stopp ohne Schwierigkeiten alsolvieren.
Als dann Jarno Trulli in der 33. Runde, eine Runde nach Fisichella an die Box zum Tanken kam, übernahm Fernando Alonso, der von Startplatz Fünfzehn aus gestartet war, die Führung vor Nico Rosberg und David Coulthard. Zwar verlor Nico Rosberg nach seinem regulär zweiten Stopp fünf Plätze, konnte sich aber diese später, nach den Stopps seiner Konkurrenten wieder holen.
Als Fernando Alonso in der 41. Runde an die Box kam, hatte dieser so viel Vorsprung, dass er noch vor dem, zu diesem Zeitpunkt auf Platz zwei liegenden David Coulthard und dessen Verfolger Lewis Hamilton raus kam. Hamilton hatte nach der Safety Car Phase eine schlechte Position und hing Runden lang im Mittelfeld hinter David Coulthard fest. Als dann Coulthard und Hamilton gleichzeitig an die Box kamen, musste sich die McLaren Crew beeilen, um ihren Fahrer vor Coulthard zu bekommen. Diese Eile war jedoch nicht von Nöten, denn auch hier, wie beim Stopp von Massa, klemmte der Tankschlauch, und Coulthard fuhr zu früh los, bzw. wurde zu früh wieder losgeschickt. Im Gegensatz zu Massa, konnte der vorhandene Lolipop – Mann dem Fahrer unmissverständlich klar machen, nicht weiter zu fahren, was bei Ferrari mit der Ampel nicht funktionieren kann, da der Fahrer nach dem Grün nicht mehr auf die Ampel schaut.
In der 43. Runde schlugen die Herzen der deutschen Formel1 – Fans sehr schnell. Hinter dem führenden Fernando Alonso lag Timo Glock auf Position Zwei vor Sebastian Vettel, Nick Heidfeld und Nico Rosberg. Leider mussten alle Deutschen Piloten, bis auf Rosberg noch zum Tanken an die Box.
Für Jarno Trulli war in der 50. Runde das Rennen mit einem Getriebeschaden beendet. Fast hätte auch Felipe Massa im Ferrari Elf Runden vor Rennende Feierabend gehabt. Nach einem Verbremser blieb Massa am äußeren rechten Rand einer Rechtskurve stehen. Als dann Massa wieder durchstartete, hätte dieser fast Adrian Sutil im Force India abgeschossen, der beim Ausweichen selber in der Streckenbegrenzung landete. Das Aus für Sutil. Diese Aktion von Massa hatte offensichtlich keine Strafe zur Folge.
Als dann das Safety Car erneut die Strecke verlassen und das Rennen wieder freigeben konnte, waren noch Acht Runden zu fahren. Fernando Alonso, der zu diesem Zeitpunkt als einziger die härtere Reifenmischung aufgezogen hatte, konnte seiner Konkurrenz locker davon fahren und in den letzten drei Runden sogar extrem langsam machen.
Kimi Räikkönen indes machte keineswegs langsam und erhöhte den Druck auf Timo Glock, der auf Position vier hinter Hamilton und Rosberg lag. Räikkönen verlor dabei die Konzentration und die Kontrolle über seinen Ferrari und schlug vier Runden vor Rennende in die Streckenbegrenzung ein. Dieses Mal musste jedoch das Rennen nicht durch ein Safety Car unterbrochen werden. Knapp vor der zwei Stunden Grenze (nach spätestens zwei Stunden muss ein Rennen abgebrochen werden) kam dann mit einer Zeit von 1:57:16,304 Fernando Alonso als erster Sieger eines Nachtrennens ins Ziel. Zweiter wurde mit einer Phantastischen Leistung und trotz einer zehn Sekunden Strafe Nico Rosberg vor Lewis Hamilton, der seinen Vorsprung in der WM auf sieben Punkte ausbauen konnte. Vierter wurde Timo Glock im Toyota vor Sebastian Vettel im Toro Rosso. Nick Heidfeld komplettierte die deutschen Punkte mit Platz Sechs. Siebter wurde David Coulthard vor Kazuki Nakajima, Jenson Button und Heikki Kovalainen. Robert Kubica wurde Elfter vor Sebastien Bourdais, Felipe Massa und Giancarlo Fisichella. Kimi Räikkönen wurde noch als Fünfzehnter gewertet.
In der WM führt nun Lewis Hamilton mit 84 Punkten vor Felipe Massa mit 77 Punkten. Nick Heidfeld kam bis auf einen Punkt an Weltmeister Kimi Räikkönen (57 Punkte) ran. Fernando Alonso kommt nun auf 38 WM – Punkte und Sebastian Vettel überholte Jarno Trulli in der Fahrerwertung. In der Teamwertung leigt nun McLaren Mercedes mit 135 Punkten vor Ferrari (134 Punkte) und BMW – Sauber (120 Punkte). Renault überholte nach dem Sieg von Alonso Toyota und liegt nun mit 51 Punkten auf Platz Vier.
Fernando Alonso, Renault (Sieger):
"This is a fantastic result – my first podium of the season; my first victory and I’m very happy, although I think it will take several days for me to realise what we have achieved. Wining a Grand Prix here just seemed to be impossible because we missed our chance yesterday in qualifying, but we were very fortunate today and it’s a superb result for the team. We chose a very aggressive strategy and we had a bit of luck, but we had the pace and the car was fantastic throughout the weekend."

Nico Rosberg, Williams - Toyota (2.Platz):
"It was a race of so many ups and downs for me. It started badly as I ended up behind a
heavy Jarno Trulli and I absolutely had to get by him to allow my strategy to work. It was
quite a hairy moment getting past because it is so bumpy to outbrake at turn 7 and I
couldn’t get close at turn 1, the only two places where overtaking is possible. Anyway,
having eventually cleared him, I couldn’t believe it when I saw that the safety car had
come out just after the team had called me in for my stop and I thought that’s the end of
it. Before my stop-go penalty, I just had to push like mad and do qualifying lap after
qualifying lap and I managed to build enough of a gap to complete my second stop and
hold on to second place. With a handful or laps to go in the most physical race this year
and a car in your mirrors, time goes amazingly slowly, but for once everything went our
way. I think Frank will have to wear his lucky tartan trousers again!"

Lewis Hamilton, McLaren Mercedes (3.Platz):
"A positive end to a difficult weekend at this fantastic new venue. I started well, but then my rear tyres faded and, although we had good pace, I wasn't in a position to challenge Felipe ahead of me. During my first pit stop I lost a bit of time because everybody came in due to the Safety Car period. After that I was unfortunately stuck behind David and although I was clearly faster it was really difficult to overtake him. After the second re-start, I tried to stay as close as possible behind Nico; however, I didn't want to take chances - particularly as the Ferraris were outside the points. Also, this is not a track where overtaking is easy. The first night race in Formula 1 history was great fun, and I now look forward to the forthcoming double-header in Japan and China."

Timo Glock, Toyota (4.Platz):
"I am happy with the job I did; I made no mistakes and fourth is a good result. It was quite tough out there in these conditions and with such a bumpy track the car was not very comfortable to drive; I am sure I will feel the effects tomorrow. My goal at the beginning of the year was to score 20 points this season so I am very satisfied to achieve that with three races still to go. However, I am fighting for the team to help them finish fourth in the Constructors' Championship and we were a bit unlucky with that today, but congratulations to Fernando, who did a great job. Now we will go to Fuji and aim to recover the lost ground."

Sebastian Vettel, Scuderia Toro Rosso (5.Platz):
"Overall, this was a good race for us, even if the Safety Car didn’t help. It was a difficult race for everyone, but the important thing is we have scored some more points. The hardest elements in the race were dealing with the heat and concentrating not to make any mistakes, as it could be very easy to clip a kerb. I tried to keep the car on track but still push like crazy. It was one of the toughest races of the season, but I think with everything that happened, this was the best result we could get. Maybe fourth might have been possible if I hadn’t lost a place to Timo (Glock) when I missed a braking point, but we can be happy with this fifth place"

Nick Heidfeld, BMW - Sauber (6.Platz):
"Obwohl man sich im Grunde nicht beschweren kann, wenn man von Startplatz neun aus Sechster wird, finde ich es unheimlich schade, dass ich heute keine Chance hatte, meinen wahren Speed zu zeigen. Mein Auto war sehr gut, und ich hätte viel schneller fahren können, wenn ich nicht ständig im Verkehr festgesteckt hätte. Ich habe sogar Sprit gespart und die Reifen geschont, weil ich hoffte, dass die anderen sich ihre Reifen ruinieren und ich dann später angreifen kann. Einige hatten später auch Probleme mit ihren Reifen, aber mein Vorteil hat trotzdem nicht für einen Angriff gereicht. Mein Start war gut, ich habe es immerhin an Nico Rosberg vorbei geschafft. Jedenfalls habe ich kaum geschwitzt, weil mein Rennen einfach nicht anstrengend war."

David Coulthard, Red Bull Racing (7.Platz):
"That was my second points finish this year, so I’ve got to be happy with today’s result. As far as the second pit stop went, the guys have been great this year and the work that they did on Saturday morning to get my car out so I could do a run was quite remarkable, so I’m not going to point any fingers at them. It’s just one of those things. There was a misunderstanding between some of the guys and I go when the lollipop comes up, but these things happen. Thankfully we got some points today. It was incredibly bumpy out there, you can’t see the braking down into Turn Seven and it was as hot as hell."

Kazuki Nakajima, Williams - Toyota (8.Platz):
"It was a great day for the team, returning to form and of course congratulations to Nico.
As far as my race was concerned, the Safety Car timing was a little bit unfortunate, but I
just had to push my race pace on regardless of what happened and overtake a few cars,
and in the end, it was great to claim a point for the first time in a while. Hopefully today
showed potential which we can try to maintain for the rest of the season"

Jenson Button, Honda (9.Platz):
"Heute war eines der Rennen, bei denen Glück und der Zeitpunkt der Safety Car-Phasen über dein Schicksal bestimmen“, meinte Jenson. „Leider war das Glück nicht auf unserer Seite, und das Timing der beiden Safety Car-Phasen machte unsere Zwei-Stopp-Strategie zunichte. Außerdem waren wir einfach nicht leistungsstark oder schnell genug, da ich das meiste Rennen über Probleme mit der Balance hatte. Die 9. Position ist immer besonders frustrierend, da man die Punkte nur knapp verpasst hat."

Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren Mercedes (10.Platz):
"I made a good start and was going to pass Kubica round the outside at the first two corners. Unfortunately he touched me and almost spun me around. My underfloor was slightly damaged as a result. I lost momentum and two cars overtook me. When the safety car came out and the pitlane was opened a couple of laps later, Lewis and I came in and I had to wait behind him until it was my turn. It then was a strange race and most of the time I was in traffic with no overtaking chances. Halfway through the race I had brake problems and had to conserve them until the finish. I’m happy for Lewis and the team now that he has extended the championship lead and we are on top of the Constructors’ rankings. I will now go for it in the next races and help to make sure that we stay ahead in both championships."

Robert Kubica, BMW - Sauber (11.Platz):
"Das Rennen war physisch sehr hart. Es gibt hier so viele Bodenwellen, ich hoffe wirklich, dass die Veranstalter an dem Streckenbelag fürs nächste Jahr etwas tun werden. Außerdem wurde die Sicht immer schlechter, weil ich müde wurde. Während der letzten 15 Runden hatte ich fürchterliche Kopfschmerzen. Die Entscheidung, nicht gleich in der ersten Runde, während die Boxengasse geschlossen war, zum Tanken zu kommen, war unglücklich und hat mich das Rennen gekostet, weil die anderen Autos hinter mir die Lücke schließen konnten. Das Team hoffte natürlich, dass die Boxengasse rasch wieder geöffnet würde, aber das war eben nicht so. So etwas gehört zum Rennsport."

Sebastien Bourdais, Scuderia Toro Rosso (12.Platz):
"It was a tough race. When I was running on my own my brake balance was fine, but once I was in traffic I kept losing the front end, even with all the brake bias on the rear. I know it was difficult to pass here, but I was even having difficulty following other cars and didn’t know where my limit was. It was a really tough race physically too, given how long it was and the lack of air coming through the cockpit and with a long last stint, I was running a heavy fuel load which meant my tyres were suffering towards the end. It’s been a long night."

Felipe Massa, Ferrari (13.Platz):
"It's hard to deal with losing in this fashion a race that was within our grasp, with a car that was just the way I wanted it. We had a good strategy and all the signs were there that we could get a one-two finish. But things can change in a moment and that's what happened today. At the pit stop, one of the guys made a mistake. But we are only human. Each one of us always tries to do our best and these things can happen. With the Safety Car still on track, I didn't lose a lap, but then I got a drive-through and later I also picked up a puncture in the left rear. On this track it is almost impossible to overtake and ending up at the back meant I had not chance of getting into the points. Seven points to make up in three races? That can be a lot or it can be a little. We have the potential to do well, as we saw today and we will give it our best shot. We mustn't give up and I'm sure we won't."

Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India (14.Platz):
"It was a long, hard race, but I have to say we really did the maximum possible. A big thank
you to everyone on the team who did such a fantastic job to get the car going again after the
accidents yesterday and for giving me a car we could really race with. It was great to be back
racing again and I think we had a good strategy that let us move up a few places. In the final
few laps I had a small problem, but I'm really pleased we could get to the finish."

Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari (15.Platz):
"I was trying to attack Glock in case he might make a mistake, but I went slightly wide at the chicane, jumping over the kerb and when the car landed, I lost control and ended up in the barriers. My situation in the championship was already rather compromised, so this doesn't really make that much difference but I am unhappy because the team has lost precious points in the Constructors' classification. In the opening laps, the car was a bit difficult but then it improved a lot, to such an extent that I was able to close right up to Hamilton. When the Safety Car came out, I know my race was compromised given that I had to pit behind Felipe. I was able to get back up to fifth but then the incident I described earlier happened. Clearly, morale is not high today. But I am not used to giving up and will do my very best to try and help the team reach its targets."

Janro Trulli, Toyota (Ausgefallen):
"The race was going pretty well, I was on a one-stop strategy and I made a good start. After the safety car, I was one of the quickest on the track and I led the race for several laps. But in the end a weekend which started pretty bad has finished even worse. I had a hydraulic problem when I would have finished in fifth; that would have been good points from a weekend which has been quite hard for me. I am exhausted because I am so disappointed. I have been fighting really hard and doing a good job but when that bad luck comes you can't do anything about it. I think I am owed a lot of good luck after that."

Adrian Sutil, Force India (Ausgefallen):
"I think it was a good race as the race pace was good and I felt really confident in the car. We
lost a little in the first safety car period as we were a little too late coming into the pits but after
that it was nice to be able to push. It was just so unlucky when Felipe spun in front of me and
then suddenly pulled away. The way was blocked, but I avoided a crash with him only to go
into the barrier myself. It's really disappointing as we've had so much bad luck already this
year. It's Fuji next though, which I really enjoy and know I can perform well on."

Mark Webber, Red Bull Racing (Ausgefallen):
"I lost seventh and then fifth gear, which cost us a fantastic result, as I was stopping for my second pit stop later than Fernando (Alonso). It would have been nice to share the podium with him today, with him winning and me second. We got a bit lucky with the safety car, but in the end it didn’t work out. We had some good pace in the second stint and it was looking good. Overall, the event here has been very impressive, I think we should do more night racing."

Rubens Barrichello, Honda (Ausgefallen):
"Da ich aus Position 18 starten musste, hatten wir natürlich auf eine Gelegenheit gehofft, meine Position verbessern zu können“, sagte Rubens. „Diese Chance ergab sich in Runde 14, als mich mein Ingenieur nach Piquets Unfall anfunkte. Ich fuhr an die Box, kurz bevor das Safety Car herausgerufen wurde. Als ich wieder auf die Strecke kam, wäre ich in einer guten Position gewesen. Aber dann ist leider der Motor kaputt gegangen. Ich hatte viel Treibstoff geladen und meine Position war toll, da ich schnell war und mit der Spitzengruppe vor mir mithalten konnte. Wir hätten bestimmt ein tolles Ergebnis erzielen können. Wir haben heute eine tolle Chance verpasst, und ich bin natürlich sehr enttäuscht"
